Mohamed Zaki Darwish is an Iraqi santur player and a performer of the art of the Iraqi Maqam, born in 1955. He learned to play santour at the Baghdad Musical Studies Institute and devoted his remaining academic years to teaching. He was awarded the Prize for Best Santur Player in Baghdad in 1976 and 1977. He left Iraq to continue other studies at Kodaly Institute in Hungary, where he became teacher. He has represented Iraq in many festivals, such as the Festival of Arab Music which took place in Baghdad in 1976 and 1977 and the seventh Cairo festival of Arab music in 1977. He has recorded several musical shows on Iraqi radio and television. He has played with and backed some of the most famous masters of the Iraqi maqam, now all deceased. His repertoire includes ancient songs and music. Mohamed Zaki thus contributes to preserve this traditional music, which originates in times immemorial and belongs to the Mesopotamian cultural heritage. He is currently a teacher at the High Institute of Music in the city of Souse in Tunisia.
